OFFF16 – The year of the micro content

Another year, another amazing OFFF.

The overall theme of the talks was pretty similar to the usual ‘work hard, play more, share more’ ideas. I definitely noticed an increased focus on shareable micro content though, which keeps an audience engaged for the supposed 8 seconds we each get to impress them. With so much information being so easily accessed through the devices in our hands, we no longer have time to spend more than a few seconds on something before we want the next thing.

I guess that means I’ve already lost you, but that’s okay.

The main titles for this year by Jam Factory and Merlin Crossingham of Aardman are so good. I love everything about it and I especially love that they gave us a little OFFF Dude to take home with us. You can watch the title video on Vimeo and you’ll soon see why I love it.

OFFF Dude figure

This is the fourth year I have attended this event and I still come home feeling re-energised and excited to get on with my personal work.

Since the first OFFF we attended in 2013 my personal goals have stayed similar, but there’s a definite shift in how I want to achieve them. In the first few years I wasn’t sure what I was doing or how I even wanted to earn a living, so I was overwhelmed by all the information I was taking in at these conferences. Nowadays I feel as I can see my work improving I’m getting closer and closer to taking the leap into freelance work and going it alone.

This time next year I hope to be in a completely different place in terms of my professional life, so who knows what adventures I’m going to have before my next post!
